Acne vulgaris is the most common skin disease. When hormone levels cause sebaceous glands to produce too much sebum, and it combines with dead skin cells, a plug will block the pore. Propionibacterium acnes is a bacteria that invades this plugged follicle, contributing more to acne. When the follicle weakens, it opens, releasing sebum, bacteria, skin and white blood cells causing inflammation of the tissue and redness. No one knows why some people have acne and not others. Certain risk factors can contribute including age, gender, hormone levels/changes, heredity, diet, medications, personal hygiene, cosmetics, environment and stress.
