The Science Behind Cellulite

The exact cause of cellulite is unknown. It’s a tricky condition that happens to heavy and lean women more so than men because a women’s fat cells and connective tissue lies vertically whereas men have a cross-cross structure. Scientists believe it is caused by weakness in the superficial fascia and the interaction between the skin, fat cells, and fibrous bands that connect the skin to underlying muscle. Over time, underlying fat cells accumulate extra nutrients from nearby arteries, causing them to grow and expand.  As these fat cells become increasingly plump, they push upwards towards the cutaneous part of the skin which ultimately creates an uneven or dimpled appearance otherwise referred to as “cottage cheese”, “orange peel” or “hail damaged” skin.

Non-Surgical Cellulite Treatment

Fast Facts

Cellulite, as we’re sure you know, is most commonly found on the thighs, hips and buttocks.

Cellulite cannot necessarily be treated with diet and exercise alone. Specific treatments are necessary to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

There are things you can do to somewhat prevent or lessen cellulite.  Cut back on caffeine, avoid yo-yo dieting, stay hydrated, avoid smoking and get enough sleep.

Weight gain can make cellulite more noticeable, but many lean people have cellulite, as well. It tends to run in families, so genetics may play the biggest role. An inactive lifestyle can also increase your chances of having cellulite, as can pregnancy.

Real life patient stories

“Dr. T did a series of injections on my thighs and butt to treat my cellulite. While it took about 3 months to complete the treatment process, the results are amazing. The dimpling is permanently gone!”
