Cellulite is a common cosmetic skin condition that causes a rippled or dimpled appearance of the skin’s surface.
Cellulite is a tricky condition caused by the interaction between your skin, fat cells, and fibrous bands that connect the skin to the underlying muscle. Over time, underlying fat cells accumulate extra nutrients from nearby arteries, causing them to grow and expand. As these fat cells become increasingly plump, they push the skin further from the underlying muscle. Because the skin is only being held to the muscle with connective fibrous bands, this ultimately creates an uneven or dimpled appearance of the skin’s surface.
Cellulite is most commonly found on the thighs, hips, and buttocks. Despite many misconceptions, cellulite cannot necessarily be treated with diet and exercise alone. Specific treatments are often necessary to address the underlying issue.
Why is cellulite more common among women? Women are more likely to develop cellulite due to the vertical arrangement of the underlying fat cells and tissue (whereas men possess a criss-cross structure). In fact, roughly 80 to 90 percent of women will struggle with cellulite at some point in their lives.
