The Science Behind Enlarged Pores
Pores sit above hair follicles and are small openings in the skin that are exit points for sweat and sebum. Enlarged pores can be a result of too much sebum (natural oil), thicker hair follicles and reduced skin elasticity. Pore size is largely genetically predetermined, so if your parents have large pores, it’s likely you will, too. Unfortunately, large pores are often associated with oily, problem-prone skin but there are many ways to keep your skin in check.

Fast Facts
Enlarged pores form for many reasons. Excessive oil production can mix with dead skin cells to block pores, making them larger and more visible.
Acne and the inflammation associated with it can cause damage the skin’s elasticin. Picking and squeezing the skin to get rid of acne or blackheads reduces skin’s elasticity and increase pore size.
Genetics, hormone levels, aging, poor skin hygiene (such as not removing makeup at night or exercising without washing after) can all worsen the appearance of enlarged pores.
Some at-home ways to reduce enlarged pores include using water-based products, applying a clay mask, wearing sunscreen, removing makeup before you go to sleep, moisturizing well morning and night and sticking to an exfoliation schedule.
