The human body has a remarkable capacity to heal itself. Regeneration of new tissue is accomplished by production of specialized cells and is fostered by growth factors and hormones. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an emerging treatment which involves the application of concentrated platelets rich in proteins that consequently release growth factors and cytokines to stimulate cellular regeneration and accelerate tissue repair. PRP was originally used in wound healing, dentistry and the treatment of sports injuries, but now it has evolved to address aesthetic issues and physiologic dysfunction. PRP is one of the most advanced, effective natural treatments for cellular rejuvenation throughout the body.
Modern technology allows us to concentrate platelets and white blood cells from a patient’s blood by a simple blood draw done in the office. The blood is placed in a centrifuge that separates the plasma and platelets from the other components of the blood. The plasma rich in platelets is then injected back into your tissues, jump-starting and significantly strengthening the body’s natural healing signals. Injections of PRP restore your aging, damaged tissues to a healthy state over the next 1 to 3 months. It is like turning back the clock: what was old is repaired and like new. Because your own blood is used, there is minimal to no risk of a transmissible diseases, infection, allergic reaction or rejection.
In the aesthetic industry, PRP has been used to treat acne, scarring, Rosacea, wrinkles, frown lines and crow’s feet. It is also effective for skin rejuvenation and tightening around the eyes, cheeks, midface, neck, jawline, back of hands, décolleté (chest),and any other areas that have sagging skin (like the knees, elbows, upper arms) . It also works for the skin laxity that results from pregnancy.
Here at RejuvenationMD, we have a number of specific procedures in which we employ PRP aesthetically. One option is called the Vampire FaceLift® in which we combine our widely used fillers with PRP. The filler helps to add volume to the face while the platelets and growth factors of PRP stimulate the regenerative process of the skin. Another option is the Vampire Facial®. This involves spreading the PRP over the surface of your face, like a mask, then using Rejuvapen™(a microneedling device) to deliver the platelets deep into the tissues. Collagen and elastin are activated as new cells are created causing a remarkable facial rejuvenation. The Vampire Breastlift® is a third option that can restore a youthful contour and volume while improving skin quality, color, texture and sensitivity. After volume is added where it is needed. PRP can be used to refine the steps of the sculpting process.
Lately, PRP has become popular for sexual wellness. There are not many options in this field for women which makes PRP quite unique. Specifically, after numbing (using a topical cream) is attained, platelet rich plasma can be injected into the sexual organs (clitoris, vagina and labia majora) to rejuvenate the female orgasmic system, hence the name the O®- Shot. Growth factors are released and improve the function of these tissues almost immediately. The benefits include greater arousal from clitoral stimulation, younger, smoother vulvar skin, a tighter vaginal opening, stronger more frequent orgasms, increased libido and lubrication, less pain with intercourse, and even decreased urinary incontinence.
PRP can benefit men sexually as well. Again, after the area is numbed with a topical cream, platelet rich plasma can be injected into areas of the penis that are most important for sexual response. Growth factors released in this area cause an increase in new blood vessel formation, improved circulation within the penis, stronger erections with increased sensation and pleasure with enhanced sexual stamina and performance. Some men even report changes in girth and length of the penis, hence the name the Priapus Shot®. Prostate discomfort as well as urinary incontinence is improved. Many of these benefits occur immediately post procedure.
Another very important application of PRP is for hair regeneration. Both male and female hair loss can be reversed by using platelet rich plasma. The procedure takes less than 90 minutes to perform in the office. After local numbing is attained, your own platelets are injected over entire scalp or in specific areas that have evidence of thinning. PRP can even be locally injected into smaller areas such as the eyebrows or beard. This is followed by a microneedle technique over the entire treatment area while additional PRP is worked into the scalp. There can be mild swelling of the forehead 1-2 days after injections which typically resolved within 48 hours. Ibuprofen can help with any residual discomfort. New hair growth can be seen as early as 2 months, but is typically evident between 4-8 months. Results have been maintained for up to 2 years in many patients, without additional injections. Conditions that respond well to this treatment include Male and Female Pattern Hair Loss, Hypotrichosis of the eyebrows or beard, Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis and various metabolic causes of hair loss such as iron deficiency and medication induced hair loss.
Although PRP is a promising therapy for most patients, there are some contraindications. These include any active or chronic infections, concurrent cancer, chemotherapy, platelet dysfunction syndrome, critical thrombocytopenia, hypofibrinogenemia, hemodynamic instability, anticoagulation therapy, chronic pathological conditions of the liver, severe metabolic and systemic disorders, and skin disease (systemic lupus erythematosus, porphyria, and allergies), as well as heavy nicotine, drug, and alcohol consumption.
